Microblogging allows users to publish brief text updates, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group chosen by the user. In addition to short text messages, Microblogging websites generally allow posting of [[micromedia]] such as photos or short audio or video clips.

The content of a micro-blog differs from a traditional blog in that it is smaller in actual size. A single entry generally consist of a single sentence, one image or a short (ten-second) video. 

The messages can be submitted to the Microblogging website by a variety of means: through a web connection, or by text messaging (mobile phone), instant messaging or email.

The short text messages often contain [[hyperlink]]s to other [[web page]]s. Because of limitations on the number of characters that can be put in the text message, [[URL shortening]] is often used to obtain a short link that will redirect to the longer [[Uniform Resource Locator]] (URL).
